How To Use a Dictionary
By Ashton, Rishi, and Max
A dictionary tells you what words mean and how to spell them. There are many words in the dictionary. All of the words are in ABC order and the words on a page are in between the two words listed on the top of each page. If you don't know how to spell a word, you can look it up in the dictionary. We learned how to use a dictionary for Writer's Workshop. Mrs. Korrow had us sit on the rug with a buddy and a dictionary. She taught us how to search for words, and the first word we looked up was "beautiful." Then, we were able to use the dictionary by ourselves when we were editing and revising our first published stories. We are glad we now know how to use a dictionary, and we like to use them.

Second Grade Scientist of the Week
By Darshini, Ethan, and Zaara
Mrs. Korrow's class is blasting with science experiments! Every week on Wednesday afternoon, our class becomes a science lab. Each classmate has a special date that they are the "Scientist of the Week," and they do an experiment of their choice and teach the class. We are coming up with awesome explosions and being amazing scientists in our classroom. Some of the experiments that our classmates have done so far include lava lamps, volcanoes, electric currents, and floating objects. We can't wait to see the rest of the experiments. Mrs. Korrow's class is booming with science, and we are all becoming science experts. Mrs. Korrow never lets us forget the experiment dates. We love science!!!

Our Published Stories
By Darien and Brittni
In Writer's Workshop we have been working on writing our personal narrative drafts. Personal narratives are stories about yourself and an event that has happened to us. We collected 5 stories in our Writer's Notebooks and then had to select our favorite story to publish. After writing our first drafts on yellow paper, we revised our stories by making boring sentences more exciting. Then, we edited our stories for spelling, capital letters, punctuation, and proper nouns. We re-wrote our stories many times because that is what good authors do. After writing our second drafts on pink paper, we finally got to write our stories on white paper and illustrate. Our class is getting ready for our first publishing celelbration. We are so excited. Writer's Workshop is so much fun!

"Farm-Ward"
By Jacob, Adam, and Karolina
Our class took a field trip to the Queens County Farm Museum. There we saw many different animals and learned how they live. Some of the animals we saw were sheep, pigs, chickens, cows, horses, goats, and alpacas. Alpacas are animals that look like llamas and they will spit if people get too close to them. Thank goodness we stayed far away! We hand fed the goats grass and it felt strange. The whole second grade went on the field trip and we went on a hay ride through the "forest." The wagon was pulled by a giant tractor. We passed a corn maze, pumpkin patch, and scarecrows. We also learned about growing vegetables in their big vegetable garden. It was interesting to learn that carrots grow underground and they smell very sweet when first picked. We had such a great time on our field trip!
Fun Community Project
By Shiv, Michelle, Anna, and Jessica
We are learning about communities in social studies. One very fun project was that each of us had to pick a certain location in our suburban community to visit. We had to take a picture of ourselves at that special spot and write about why it is an important place in our community. It was so much fun to see everyone's pictures of where they went. One of the places that was visited was the local diner. We found out that it is important to our community because people can go out and eat a lot of different types of food. A diner helps feed people in our community. We loved learning about all of the important places in our community!

Interesting Morning Work
By Guruprasad and Samay
Morning work is important to us because we review information that we have already learned. We do math, grammar, and geography. In math we do addition, subtraction, place value, skip counting, and patterns. Our grammar sheets help us to understand correct punctuation, capital letters, and sentence writing. We have a weekly geography packet that we work on each day. Some of the topics we review are reading a globe, reading a map, hemispheres and using a compass rose. We love our morning work!!!
Thank you for checking out our 2nd class blog!! We hope you enjoyed it! See you soon :)
